Button Nose: What It Is, How to Tell If You Have One, and Whether You Can Get One

Button Nose: What It Is, How to Tell If You Have One, and Whether You Can Get One

A button nose is a small, compact nose with a softly rounded tip and, usually, a slight upward tilt. It's an informal beauty term, not a medical diagnosis, so there's no official measurement behind it — and sources define it a little differently. Below: what a button nose looks like, how it differs from a snub or upturned nose, how to check your own, and whether it can be changed.

It's one of the most searched nose shapes, and one of the most loosely used labels. Plenty of noses called "button" are really snub, upturned or just small.

The nose is only one feature in how a face reads. Maxxing's attractiveness test rates your nose alongside your other features and explains each score — an AI estimate, not a verdict.

What Is a Button Nose?

A button nose is small and compact, with a softly rounded tip, a low-to-moderate bridge and a slight upward tilt at the tip. The name refers to the small, round tip. It's a descriptive label from beauty and cosmetic-surgery language, not a medical term.

Most descriptions agree on five traits:

  • Size: short and small relative to the rest of the face

  • Tip: softly rounded, not sharp or pointed

  • Bridge: low to moderate, usually straight or slightly dipped, with no visible hump

  • Tilt: the tip turns up slightly, not dramatically

  • Nostrils: small to medium, only partly visible from the front

Definitions aren't standardized, though. Some guides say the tip sits level, others say it tilts up, and a few clinics describe a button nose as a wide, bulbous tip. This guide uses the most common description above.

What Does a Button Nose Look Like? Side Profile and Front View

From the side, a button nose is short, with a low bridge running into a rounded tip that lifts slightly. From the front, it looks small and fairly narrow, with a round tip and nostrils that show only a little.

button nose side profile

Side profile

  • Short distance from the bridge to the tip

  • Straight or slightly dipped bridge, with no bump

  • Tip rounded and tilted up a little

Front view

  • Small, rounded tip that reads as one soft shape

  • Nostrils small to medium and only partly visible

  • Overall width narrow to medium

You'll also see the terms "straight button nose" and "flat button nose." A straight one has an even bridge line; a flat one has a low bridge that sits close to the face. Both are still called button noses when the tip is small and round.

Button Nose Variations: Small, Wide, Big, and Upturned

"Button nose" covers a range, and people add a size or shape word to be more specific. These are common online labels, not formal categories.

Variation

What it usually means

How to check

Small button nose

Compact overall, short and narrow

The whole nose looks petite next to your eyes and lips

Wide button nose

Round tip, but broader nostrils or tip

From the front, the tip and nostrils look wider but still round

Big button nose

Round tip on a larger nose

If the nose is long and the tip is large, compare with a bulbous nose

Upturned button nose

Round tip that tilts up more than slightly

Overlaps with snub and upturned (celestial) noses, covered next

Button Nose vs. Snub Nose vs. Upturned Nose

A button nose is defined by its small size and round tip. A snub or upturned nose is defined by how far the tip tilts up. A nose can be both, which is why the labels overlap. A bulbous nose is a different thing: an enlarged, rounded tip on a nose of any length.

Sources disagree on where one label ends and the next begins, so treat the table as a guide, not a rule. The two checks most guides use are tilt (button vs. snub) and tip size (button vs. bulbous). For the rest of the range, see the full nose types guide. At the other end sits the Roman nose, which is defined by a prominent bridge rather than a small tip.

How to Tell If You Have a Button Nose

To check, look at three things: size, tip shape and tip tilt. A button nose is small relative to your face, has a round tip and tilts up only slightly. If the tip tilts up clearly, compare with a snub nose; if the tip is large, compare with a bulbous one.

do i have a button nose
  1. Take the photo from farther away. A mathematical model in a 2018 JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery study estimated that a selfie taken at 12 inches makes the nasal base look about 30% wider than a portrait taken from 5 feet. Use a timer or ask someone, then zoom in.

  2. Get a true side profile. Keep the camera level with your nose and your head straight.

  3. Check the profile. Is the nose short, with a low bridge and no hump?

  4. Check the tip. Is it round rather than pointed, and tilted up only slightly?

  5. Check the front view. If your nostrils are only partly visible, that fits a button nose. If they show clearly, compare with a snub or upturned nose.

These are descriptive labels, not a clinical test, and a photo can't settle borderline cases. To see how your nose fits with the rest of your features, a facial feature analyzer looks at each one separately.

Button Nose on Women and Men

The shape isn't gendered: women and men both have button noses. On either, the small size and rounded tip tend to read as softer and more youthful than a longer, more angular nose. How that comes across also depends on the rest of the face — the jaw, brows and facial hair on men, for example — not the nose alone.

What people find attractive varies by person and by culture, so a button nose is a description, not a target.

Is a Button Nose Attractive?

No single nose shape is attractive to everyone. A button nose is often called cute, and researchers have tied a small nose to the "baby schema" — a set of infant features, including a round face and big eyes, that people rate as cute. That research is about infant faces, not adult noses.

  • Why it reads as cute: In experiments, infant photos edited to have stronger baby-schema features were rated cuter than unedited ones. In a study of children's faces, the effect on adults' ratings of likeability and attractiveness disappeared after about 4.5 years of age. So it doesn't show that adult button noses are more attractive.

  • What ratings show: In a 2025 3D rating study, 72 laypeople and 50 clinicians scored faces with different nose-to-lip angles. A 90° angle scored highest on the male face and 80-90° on the female face. The study used one male and one female face, so it's a data point, not a standard.

  • "Perfect button nose": a social media label, not a measurement. It tells you what's trending, not what's attractive.

Take the label as a description of a look, not a score.

Celebrities With a Button Nose

The names that come up most often are Scarlett Johansson, Jenna Ortega and Kelly Rowland. NewBeauty lists them, along with SZA, as examples of the shape.

Treat these as reference points for the look, not as a classification. Nobody measured these noses, and other lists put some of the same people under "celestial" or "upturned." Photos taken with different angles, lenses and lighting also change how a nose reads.

Does a Button Nose Belong to Any Ethnicity?

No. A button nose isn't tied to any ethnicity, race or region, and you can't tell someone's ancestry from their nose. A systematic review found that average nose proportions differ between groups, but nose size and shape don't define racial groups.

People of Asian, European, African or any other ancestry can have a button-shaped nose. Search results sometimes link button noses to specific regions, but those claims usually come from unsourced lists, not studies.

What research does show is that nose shape is inherited. A genetic study of about 6,000 people with mixed European, Native American and African ancestry found several genes linked to nose width and shape. That points to how traits are passed on in families, not to a shape that "belongs" to a group.

Is a Button Nose Genetic? Does It Change With Age?

Partly. Nose shape is heritable, but no single gene makes a button nose. In a study of 7,569 Koreans, heritability was estimated at 0.417 for how far the nasal tip sticks out and 0.365 for the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Those are moderate values: genes matter, and so does everything else.

The nose also keeps changing in adulthood:

  • In a study of 48 Korean adults followed for at least 10 years, noses got longer and the tip pointed more downward.

  • In a CT study of 200 Asian adults, people aged 65-80 had a more drooping tip, thicker nasal skin and signs of nasal bone resorption compared with people aged 20-35.

Both samples were Asian, so the exact changes may differ elsewhere. The takeaway: a nose that reads as button at 22 can look different at 50, and that's normal aging, not a flaw.

Can You Get a Button Nose?

You can fake a button nose with makeup, but you can't change the shape without a medical procedure. The tip is held in place by cartilage and ligaments, and we found no peer-reviewed studies showing that exercises, massage or pushing the tip up reshape it. Healthline reaches the same conclusion.

Exercises and the "push your tip up" trick

Videos show people pushing the nose tip upward for 10 to 30 seconds a day. The tip's resting shape comes from the lower lateral cartilages and the ligament attachments that support them. Small muscles at the base of the nose do move the tip — an overactive depressor septi nasi muscle can pull it down when you smile — but that's movement, not resting shape. We found no studies testing whether daily pressure changes the tip.

Makeup contouring

Contouring is the only no-procedure option that visibly changes how a nose reads, and it washes off. A general method:

  1. Pick a matte shade a bit deeper than your skin tone. Makeup artists quoted by Essence recommend a cool-toned neutral brown over a reddish one for a natural result.

  2. Draw soft lines down both sides of the bridge, stopping at the sides of the tip, and blend until the edges disappear.

  3. Add a short horizontal line just above the tip to join the side lines, then blend. This is the step that gives the illusion of a button nose (tutorial).

  4. Dab a lighter concealer on the tip and down the center of the bridge so the tip looks lifted (Laura Mercier).

Procedures

Rhinoplasty and filler injections can change how a nose looks. Fillers are temporary. Systematic reviews report high satisfaction with filler-based "nonsurgical rhinoplasty" — about 95% in one review of 1,600 patients. Serious complications such as vascular occlusion are rare, but they can cause tissue death or, in the worst cases, blindness. The evidence is limited and complications may be underreported.

Results depend on your anatomy, skin thickness and goals, and it's a medical decision: if you're considering one, talk to a board-certified facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon. Don't base it on a filter or a close-up selfie — as the photo tip above shows, those make a nose look wider than it is.

FAQ

What is a button nose?

A button nose is a small, compact nose with a softly rounded tip and a slight upward tilt. It's an informal beauty term, not a medical diagnosis.

What is the difference between a button nose and a snub nose?

A button nose is defined by its small size and round tip, with little or no tilt. A snub nose has a clearly lifted tip and more visible nostrils. The two overlap, and sources draw the line differently.

Are button noses rare?

There's no reliable data on how common they are. The term is informal and has no standard definition, and percentages you see online usually aren't traced to a study.

Which celebrities have a button nose?

Scarlett Johansson, Jenna Ortega and Kelly Rowland are commonly cited examples. It's an opinion-based label, not a measured one.

Can a button nose be wide or big?

Yes. A button nose can be a little wider or larger and still be called one, as long as the tip is round and the nose isn't dominated by an enlarged tip. If it is, the better label is bulbous.

Does your nose change as you get older?

Yes. Studies of adults show the nose gets longer, the tip tends to droop and the nasal skin thickens with age.
